As if another season of AMC’sThe Walking Deadwas just not enough zombies on the small screen for you, today we have word that the powers that be behind the scenes at Netflix have given their hitZ Nationspin-off series Black Summer the green light for a second season. Like the first season, season two is all set to bring us eight episodes featuringMy Bloody ValentineandSin Cityactress Jamie King’s return as Rose, a mother who is separated from her daughter during the earliest and most deadly days of a zombie apocalypse.
Production on the much-anticipated second season ofBlack Summeris planned to kick off in Alberta, Canada sometime in early 2020 with Jamie King pulling double duty this time as lead actress and producer. But King will not be the only actor from the first season making a comeback.BlindspottingandLuciferactor Justin Chu Cary is all set to return as well in the role of a criminal named Spears, along withAliens Ate My HomeworkandMy Christmas Dreamactress Christine Lee as Ooh “Sun” Kyungsun, a North Korean woman looking for her missing mother. Additional cast members will be announced later.
The show comes to us fromZ Nationcreators Karl Schaefer and John Hyams and is a spin-off of sorts, likeFear the Walking Deadis toThe Walking Dead. That said, SyFy’sZ Nationseries seemed content to go for laughs while this Netflix spin-offBlack Summeris much more interested in the brutal realism of the situation. While Schaefer and Hyams served as co-showrunners for the hit first season, only Hyams will be reclaiming that position on this upcoming second season.
The first season was released onNetflixback on June 07, 2025, and has been snatching up praise and killer ratings ever since. In fact, why the numbers aren’t available here in the U.S., evidently, the show was a massive success in the U.K. earlier this year ranking as the most-watched Netflix series across the pond. Wow. Not that the series is getting a bad rap here in the states. Far from it. The first season currently holds a 75% approval rating over at Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads, “Black Summer has enough undead carnage and a sinewy pace to please zombie fans, but the series suffers from scant characterization and doesn’t add much storytelling meat to the genre’s gnawed-on bone.”
And if that barely passing fresh Rotten Tomatoes score wasn’t enough for you,The ShiningandITauthor Stephen King has been singing the show’s praise over on Twitter writing:
“BLACK SUMMER (Netflix): Just when you think there’s no more scare left in zombies, THIS comes along. Existential hell in the suburbs, stripped to the bone. No long, fraught discussions. No endless flashbacks, because there’s no back story. No grouchy teens. Dialogue is spare. Much shot with a single handheld camera, very fluid. Showrunners could learn a lot from this. If they could work, that is.”
