One of the end credits scenes in this summer’s blockbusterAnt-Manfeatured Captain America (Chris Evans) and The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) finally tracking down The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), whose metal arm was trapped in some sort of vice. We saw a bit more of this scene in thefirst trailerforCaptain America: Civil War,Marvel’s firstPhase Threemovie, which also revealed that The Winter Soldier is starting to get some of his memories back from his childhood with Steve Rogers. While doing press for the international release ofThe Martian,Sebastian Stanteased thatCaptain America: Civil Warwill shed new light on The Winter Soldier’s story.
“Where we find him afterCaptain America: The Winter Soldier, he’s in a place where he is learning about himself, and he’s discovering - as you saw in the last scene of The Winter Soldier, at the museum - he’s starting to put the pieces together, starting to learn about the past. Where he’s been. What he’s done. And as you’ll see in the next movie, it doesn’t come without a huge price: emotionally, mentally and… yeah, it’s not easy for him to learn about what he’s done.”
The Winter Soldier, a.k.a. Bucky Barnes, was first revealed in 2011’sCaptain America: The First Avenger, and he returned in last year’sCaptain America: The Winter Soldier, where we learned that he was captured by Hydra and turned intoThe Winter Soldier. While his memories of his childhood friend Steve Rogers were presumably erased by Hydra, we did see at the end ofCaptain America: The Winter Soldierthat he is finally starting to remember who he really was before his transformation. The actor also revealed that he may always have some relationship with Hydra.
“You have to remember it is the same Hydra in a sense that is responsible for him still being alive. And what happened before the movie Winter Soldier - and there will be a lot of things sort of made more clear inCivil Warabout what happened with him - kind of set up this relationship that he may always have with Hydra, one way or another. Because in a way they are like his second family. If that makes sense.”
