Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remakeis one of the most whimsical experiences we’ve had in quite some time, bringing the classic turn-based JRPG to the modern era, all while keeping the visual style and gameplay true to its origins. One of the first things that needs to be done in the story, outside of talking to the king, is obtaining the Thief Key. This an important key that you will need to progress the main story in the small town of Reeve to the north of Aliahan.
This key will allow the protagonist to open any red doors in the world, making it valuable when exploring. This is as opposed to the Magic Key which will be able to open any door that is marked blue.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Modernizes the Classic Without Sacrificing Charm
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is coming out soon and these are early impressions of what we might expect to see.
Gaining Insight
While this is an optional portion of the quest, you’re able to gain insight into where exactly you will need to go to obtain the Thief Key. In theAliahan Castle, head down to their cellar where you will find jail cells with two individuals.
The dungeon is located at the southeast most of the castle, on the first floor. You’ll need to go through the garden and most eastern room to gain access to this. The first jail cell has a masked man who simply wants you to open the door, while the second jail cell has a more interesting individual.

Here isKirk Buzzer, a seemingly insignificant individual, but through his dialogue, he reveals that he lost his trusty thief’s key that would open any door marked red in Dreamer’s Tower. Quite handy information.
Promontory Passage
The first thing you will need to do is gain access to the Dreamer’s Tower. Unfortunately, the tower is located on a small island to the west, but luckily there is a pathway to get you there. Head all the way to thesouthwestto find a small cave that will eventually lead you to a cellar.
This is a surprisingly-lengthy basement considering it connects directly to the Aliahan Castle and to a small cave just south of Reeve. The passage also has a staircase in the middle of the lengthy corridor that will lead directly to the Dreamer’s Tower’s first floor. Also, be sure to bring a character with multi-hit weapons, as there are quite a few encounters that can just overwhelm you otherwise.

Dreamer’s Tower
If you’re feeling you need to heal, there’s thankfully an inn located on the western portion of Dreamer’s Tower, although if someone has died, you’ll need to go back to find a Priest. Head up the stairs all while fighting the various monsters.
There are four floors to Dreamer’s Tower, but most of the staircases and means of ascending are fairly close to one another. Simply head upward until you reach the roof. You’ll need to take the spiral staircase as otherwise you’ll be locked out of the room you need to get into. When you’re there, simply talk to the old man at the top of the Tower and he’ll bestow upon you the Thief Key.
