In line with this, on the 29th, BioWare announced a “restructuring” to concentrate its efforts on the new Mass Effect. However, this reorganization has seemingly resulted in several job losses.

In its latest statement, the studio mentioned that some staff members had been reassigned to other positions within Electronic Arts. However, it failed to mention the new layoffs.

The downsizing has left Dragon Age’s lead writer, Patrick Weekes, unemployed. Weekes, who had been with the studio for 20 years, has now announced that he is looking for work.

BioWare has also let go of another writer, Brianne Battye, who will be transferred to EA Motive, along with her colleague Sheryl Chee. Both were prominent writers for The Veilguard.

Cortney Woods and John Dombrow, also writers for the latest Dragon Age, have moved to Sucker Punch to work on Ghost of Yotei.

The list continues with Mary Kirby and Lukas Kristjanson (both laid off in 2023), as well as Jo Berry, who has also been transferred to Motive.

The writers lament BioWare’s decision to let go of the entire team. Former employee Ann Lemay has pointed out that none of the original writers of Mass Effect or Dragon Age remain at the company.

The Layoffs Have Also Affected Other Departments at BioWare

Producer Jen Cheverie expressed feeling “devastated” by her departure after 14 years at the company. Editor Ryan Cormier, who spent 26 years at BioWare, is also now seeking employment.

While BioWare is being held responsible for these layoffs, many are also pointing fingers at Electronic Arts. Several former employees have described the situation as a “reckoning” for Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s poor performance.

Recently, reports indicated that the latest entry in the saga sold 1.5 million copies—half of what the company had projected—leading to these drastic adjustments.

For now, neitherElectronic Arts nor BioWarehave commented on the layoffs. Meanwhile, development on the new Mass Effect continues with a smaller team composed of franchise veterans.
