Fountain of Youthis Ritchie’s first movie that will debut exclusively on a streaming platform, but it looks one of his most cinematic yet. His most recent directorial effort,The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which starred Henry Cavill and Alan Ritchson, fared well with critics but became a box office bomb. Up next, he hasIn the Greyreleasing in theaters through Lionsgate, another action flick that stars Cavill in the lead role. Meanwhile, Ritchie is set to premiere his latest streaming series,MobLand, starring Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren, later this month.Fountain of Youthfeels like a pretty big departure in Ritchie’s library, and it could quickly shoot up as one of his best. When first-look images ofFountain of Youthdebuted a few months ago, Guy Ritchie described the film “in the vein ofIndiana Jonesbut contemporary.” In many ways, the ambitious endeavor is amajor departure from his usual work, which tends to skew into the “comedy-action-gangster genre.” However, Ritchie, who seems to have an endless work ethic, did not want to box himself in to a singular kind of film after the success ofThe Gentlemen.So,Fountain of Youthserves as his way of spreading his wings as a filmmaker.
“I found myself feeling like if I wasn’t too careful, I was ending up in a comedy-action-gangster genre, of which, of course, I’m comfortable and enjoy, but at some point, I thought, you have to spread your wings as a writer-director.”
Natalie Portman, who stars inFountain of Youthas John Krasinski’s estranged sister, teased that the film is unlike anything she has done before. Judging by the trailer, it’s going to be a globe-trotting adventure that moves quickly from one exotic locale to the next. Her words:
“I’d never been to Cairo or Vienna before and was blown away by both cities — some of the most special places I’ve ever been. We also had a crazy chase sequence we shot in Liverpool, which was some really wild car work, and an incredible sunken ship sequence we shot on stage in London. It was always an epic day with wild stunts and scenarios to tackle. Just the most fun you can have, really.”
