SinceJoss Whedonhas retired from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (at least for now), outside ofKevin Feige, the directing duo ofJoeandAnthony Russomay very well be the most powerful people working for Marvel Studios. They directed the last twoCaptain Americamovies, both of which are considered to be among the best movies in the MCU. Now, the pair are gearing up to shoot the next twoAvengersmovies, starting withAvengers: Infinity Warand then moving onto the now untitledAvengers 4. The recent name change threw a lot of people off, and the directors recently took some time to address the decision.
TheRussobrothers are currently promoting the release ofCaptain America: Civil Waron Blu-ray and DVD and recently spoke withCinemaBlend. During the course of the interview, the subject of the recent name change for the newAvengersmovies came up. While they didn’t divulge and overly specific information, or state whatAvengers 4will be titled yet, they did address the change, saying that the two movies are going to be very different from one another, but will still share plenty of connective tissue. Here is whatJoe Russohad to say.
“We wanted the movie to be very different and distinctive, you know. There’s certainlycross-pollinationbetween characters and some story-arcs, but you know, the first movie is very clearlyAvengers: Infinity Warand, in time, we will reveal what the second film is.”
When Marvel first announced their Phase 3 slate back in 2014, the movies were announced asAvengers: Infinity WarPart 1 and 2. However, back in MayJoe Russoconfirmed that the titled would change, and recently it was revealed that it would no longer be a Part 1 and Part 2 situation. As for when we are going to find out the title forAvengers 4? Don’t think it will be anytime soon.Anthony Russoaddressed that in the interview as well, and it seems like we may have to wait a while. Here is what he had to say.
“You’ll learn that, but not for quite some time.”
BothAvengers: Infinity Warand the untitledAvengers 4will beshooting back-to-backstarting this November, with the shoot expected to last over nine months.Christopher MarkusandStephen McFeely, who wrote all threeCaptain Americamovies, wrote the script for both of these newAvengersmovies, but no specific plot details have surfaced yet. We do know thatThanos, who is being played byJosh Brolin, will be themain villain. We can also safely assume he will be trying to assemble all of the Infinity Gems for the Infinity Gauntlet, so that he can become even more super powerful and destroy lots of stuff.
Given that both movies will still be shooting back-to-back, and that they were both written at the same time by the same writers, it is hard to believe that both of these newAvengersmovies won’t be heavily connected. Not only that, but Thanos has been teased for four years now, and it would be nearly impossible to think that Marvel Studios won’t be using him heavily in both movies. Especially given the general criticism over the MCU having underdeveloped villains, with the exception of Loki.Avengers: Infinity Waris slated for release on June 08, 2025, and the as of yet untitledAvengers 4is due out a year later on July 03, 2025.
