The original version of Runescape developed by Jagex, Runescape Classic is closing it’s doors. Originally released in 2001, it has had a 17 year run and will finally say farewell on August 6th, 2018.
RuneScape Classic is to Shut Down After 17 Years
The classic fantasy MMORPG RuneScape Classic is one of the original MMOs and has been running for more than a decade. It’s a long time considering the only other MMORPG to have a similar length of history isWorld of Warcraftseries (which has been running for around 14 years) or even EverQuest.
A sequel to the game was released in 2004 causing Jagex to rename the original Runescape to Runescape Classic. However, over the years it has dwindled in popularity but still holds a community on platforms such as Twitch and Youtube. In afarewell post on the website blog, Jagex explained that the game will start to be taken offline over the next three months. The blog post also shares that newer technology has made games like Classic more “easily abused” making it more vulnerable to botting.
We’ve not fully supported RuneScape Classic for years, so why are we suddenly seeing it as a problem now? The truth is that bots and lack of community safety tools are serious problems, however, we also feel that we can no longer offer long term service reliability due to the growing risk of unrecoverable game breaking bugs.
While this is sad news RuneScape does that other versions of their games such as Runescape 3, Old School Runescape and even Jagex are looking to introduce a mobile version. While this might not be exactly the same, it might offer comfort to those who might want to check back into some familiar grounds. Runescape will be taking it’s servers offline at 8 am BST/12 am PST on August 6th, 2018.
