Earlier today, Spike Chunsoft’s roguelike RPG, Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery of Serpentcoil Island got its second round of new content. This new update brings new features, balance adjustments, extra dungeon floors to explore and a brand new playable character. It might not sound like much at first, but it could very well be enough to keep dungeon-crawling fans busy for a decent while.
This content update’s new features mostly center around improving the overall quality of life in Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery of Serpentcoil Island. Players who aren’t very familiar with Shiren games or even roguelike dungeon-crawlers in general can now get the required basic skills in the new Basic Training mode. In this mode, players are presented with a set of predetermined items and enemies and are then guided through different methods for clearing the floor.
For players that feel as though they’ve been getting blindsided a bit too often, there is now the new “Threat Alert” feature. With this turned on, players will now be warned if incoming damage is enough to knock them out, making it easier to plan movements or prioritize enemies. Of course, those who want the full challenge don’t have to use it; the feature is entirely optional.
Sacred Tree mode can now challenge players with floors upon floors of extra gameplay.
Most significantly for current players, dungeons have been greatly expanded in Sacred Tree mode. Each available dungeon has been expanded slightly differently, with some dungeons, like Domain of Staves and Scrolls, getting an extra thirty floors, while many others, such as Cat-Ching’s Divine Will, getting a whopping 89 additional floors. In other words, there’s quite a bit more to see and explore in this mode now. Check out the full list below:
