Revealed as part of the PlayStation Showcase digital livestream today, Square Enix announced a new four-on-four online shooter for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. The announcement trailer showcases a variety of the title’s colorful characters engaging in foam-to-foam combat in battle arenas. In FOAMSTARS, foam is the ultimate resource. It can be used to create slippery surfaces that players can use to surf around the arena at high speed. It can build terrain and help players defend from enemy attacks, or even create high vantage points to take out opponents. Players can also foam up the opposition and win the match. A new announcement trailer shows off a medley of slick moves and high-energy play.

With the title seemingly taking inspiration from other shooters like Splatoon and even Fortnite, especially with its building mechanics, it will be interesting to see just how Square Enix will set itself apart with this new shooter. Longtime fans of the publisher may be holding their breath to see if this title has more longevity than Square Enix’s short-lived Babylon’s Fall; the title being a four-player cooperative multiplayer effort that was a rare commercial failure for both Square Enix and developer PlatinumGames. Only six months after that title’s release in 2022, Square Enix announced a cease in support for the game’s servers. Hopefully a lesson was learned that, in order for an online cooperative title to be successful, rich and varied gameplay is required. When looking at the long-term success of titles like Splatoon, Fortnite and even Destiny, the offering of numerous in-game events along with continued support from community feedback can really keep a title going for years. Even titles that fumbled their launch, like Fallout 76 for example, can make a great comeback when focusing on the needs of the player-base.

No major details outside of announcement have been revealed, but the trailer gives us an idea that this title may have its own world-building along with its varied cast. Showing off a variety of foam weapons, we can see there’s a play style available for most everyone while a groovy Persona-esque soundtrack plays in the background. Possibly hoping to dethrone the Splatoon franchise, this wacky third-person shooter shows players painting the town with various foam colors in a high contrast style.
