It’s not too long until the release ofStranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Originwhich launches this month. The Action-RPG which is set in the same universe as Final Fantasy 1, brings a new combat challenge for players on March 18th. A new interview with the Director, Daisuke Inoue and Producers Jin Fujiwara and Fumihiko Yasuda of Team Ninja shed some light on the location inspirations, crafting systems, the party system as well as the feedback they received from the trial versions.

Locations and Their Influences

Two majorLocationshave already been revealed the Cavern of Earth and the Sunken Shrines. These places were shown inrecent trailers, but their inspiration lies within the original Final Fantasy game according to Inoue. The Cavern of Earth gains a very strong theme of “the undead”, a tomb that is also inspired by Final Fantasy XII, even influencing the dungeon’s mechanics.

But not everything is beneath the earth, the title also gets a forest area that is inspired by elves and magic. The Sunken Shrine also a familiar area if you’ve played the original FF1, is where you would come face to face with the Kraken. An iconic place in the game Inoue shares it was a must-visit forJackand his gang to stumble upon on their way to Chaos.

The focus for Stranger of Paradise was to not just take inspiration from the previous titles but to make levels “fun in its own right”, being the developer’s own interpretation. So even if you have played FF1, it looks like there will be plenty of surprises and nostalgia.

Crafting Systems

Previously it was revealed crafting systems are a part of Strange of Paradise, the options to upgrades and disassemble equipment using upgrades obtained from defeating enemies or opening treasure chests. The way the weapons are designed in this system allows players to gain control over the “effect of the equipment” to a certain extent, rather than relying on the equipment they find.

The systems are inspired by previous titles the team has worked on, but Inoue shared their favourites were Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Rings of Fate and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Echoes of Time. After discussing with the team, they settled on allowing players to craft at the Smithy to upgrade rather than anywhere in the game. The crating system overall sounds like it is suited to various playstyles, giving more flexibility.

Stranger of Paradise is where the Party is At

Stranger of Paradise will give players a group of three characters to team up with, rather than just a duo. This size of the group brings balance to the game as players can also switch between different jobs but their party members cannot.

Trial and Error

Feedback from the trial versions of the game has been important for the dev team. The comments were mainly about improving the AI system, framerate stability, and matchmaking for multiplayer. These are key areas they decided to work on, so hopefully, with the full release of the game, it will be much smoother when it comes to performance, combat, and teaming up with others.

Yasuda shared that they have also taken a look at the playability and difficulty levels, which sounds like they have made some adjustments according to player feedback.
