Today, Disney and Lucasfilm have released the first image, which shows the title character in his full armor strutting through an environment that looks every bit likeStar Wars. Though, there is no confirmation on the planet our newly introduced warrior is scouting out.
Disney and Lucasfilm officially announced today that production has begun onThe Mandalorian, which will debut exclusively on the new Disney streaming service launching next year. Thelive-action Star Wars TV showwill follow a new character who looks like a much slicker, updated Boba Fett.
This galactic cowboy, who is hiding in the outer rim, is from Boba and Jango Fett’s home world of Mandalore. He will follow in their footsteps, in a story that is set just a few years after the fall of the Empire and the events witnessed inReturn of the Jedi. The timeline is not fully established, but episodes will take place before the emergence of The First Order, and everything that goes down inThe Force AwakensandThe Last Jedi.
This lone gunfighter will traverse the outer reaches of the galaxy, carrying out his bad business far from the authority of the New Republic. While The Mandalorian is the hero of the show, it’s clear that he’s not necessarily one of the good guys.
Jon Favreau is writing and executive producingThe Mandalorian, which is the first live-action series following a number of animatedStar Warsshows that includeStar Wars: The Clone Wars,Star Wars RebelsandStar Wars Resistance. This will show a decidedly different side to this sprawling universe.
Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) has been announced as the director of the first episode. Additional episodic directors include Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok). It will be executive produced byJon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist will serve as co-executive producer. This latest update comes fromStarWars.com, who plan to announce more about the show in the very near future.
The first season of the Disney streamingStar Warsaction-adventure will consist of 10 episodes. These episodes have a combined budget of $100 million. That means $10 million is being devoted to each single episode. It’s too early to say if there will be a Season 2, but if it’s a hit you can expect the adventures ofThe Mandalorianto carry on into the future.
It was recently rumored thatPedro Pascalis set to headlineThe Mandalorian. He is known for his roles in the Netflix seriesNarcosand the movieKingsman 2: The Golden Circle. He’ll next be seen inWonder Woman 1984. None of the cast was mentioned in Disney and Lucasfilm’s big reveal today. Is this Pedro Pascal in costume? That hasn’t been revealed. It is also possible that Pascal is up for a different role in the show.
Not only is Disney gearing up to launch this epic 10-episodeStar Warsseries on their impending streaming channel, it was recently announced that they have standalone series planned for several Marvel characters including Loki and Scarlet Witch. No otherStar Warslive-action series have been announced for Disney streaming, but Lucasfilm did announce theirClone Warsrevival a few months ago at Comic-Con. The Mandalorian will debut sometime in late 2019. Which will butt up right against the release ofStar Wars 9, in theaters December of next year.
