Avalanche Software and Warner Bros. Games today showcased new Hogwarts Legacy gameplay focused on the character creator, Hogwarts Castle exploration, and combat.
The hotly anticipated Wizarding World project finally apparates onto consoles and PC early next year, but much of the game remains wrapped in mystery. Since its 2020 announcement, Hogwarts Legacy has only been shown to players in small snippets. Thankfully, the developer and publisher behind the game today showcased a bunch of new gameplay, including what activities players can expect and which ones won’t make the game.

In Hogwarts Legacy, you play as a fifth year student who only just came into their powers (why is a question the developers are keeping a secret). From the outset, players will get to customize their character, including hairstyles, facial details, coloring, and more. From there, players are dropped into Hogwarts. During the showcase, the Avalanche team took players into the never-before-seen Hufflepuff Common Room before taking a trip around the castle and detailing what kind of activities are available. These include Classes, which serve as optional sidequests to advance your spells.
For combat training, players will be available to participate in the dueling club housed in the clock tower. This will let you put your skills to the test before tackling the game’s more dangerous tasks and story moments. These include quests that take players off the Hogwarts grounds.
Not available in the game are a series of popular activities previously available in some of EA’s Harry Potter games. These include Gobstones, Wizard’s Chess, and, unfortunately, Quidditch. While these aren’t in the game, the developers suggested some elements may show up in the story in some fashion. Just don’t expect to be able to play any of these side activities.
Hogwarts Legacy launches July 10, 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PS4, and Xbox One. A Switch version will launch at a later date.
