While Death Stranding is mostly a straightforward experience, guiding the player through a curated movie theater experience, there is a “choice” very early on that may have fans scratching their heads at why they were given an alternate path. We’re, of course, talking about the“I won’t do it”line after the opening credits roll when talking with Fragile. While most players most likely won’t actually press that button, we’re here to tell you what actually happens if you do.

Tamagotchi Plaza debuts in a very low position while Death Stranding 2 soars in the UK games sales charts.

Right when you start the game, you will be on a very rocky mountain top, with steep drops and razer edges. One poorly timed balancing act, and you’ll fall to your death right away with poor Lou. After getting through the tutorial and opening credits, Sam Porter Bridges will come across a camp full of BTs, but really it’s an illusion he put up to scare off anyone who stumbles across his home.

After settling in, a mysterious helmeted individual comes across his place, and that individual is Fragile, played by Léa Seydoux. She will come to you telling you that she needs your help to set up the network down in Mexico, but, of course, Sam is hesitant.

The Illusion of Choice

After concluding Fragile’s pitch, you will come across your first dialogue bar:

The first two dialogue options on the left and right d-pad will simply give context to what’s happening in Mexico, while the last dialogue choice will simply accept the mission. “Why me” is the dialogue option that opens up the path to rejecting Fragile’s request. Clicking this will eventually spin it off into “Any other reasons?” and then finally “I won’t do it.”

This piece of dialogue is a comical paradox. Accepting the mission is essentially mandatory for Sam; if we had the option to simply ignore Fragile, then there wouldn’t be a game to play. Instead, what happens is the game will literally rewind to when Sam is cooking for Lou and the screen pans to a wall of photos of the two.

This time, we will see a photo of Sam and Fragile in the exact situation, which we will skip back to. If you reject it once more, the sequence will play once again, but this time only give you the option to accept the mission. There’s no getting out of this one.
